The Scottish Government is in the process of reviewing the business rates system and as part of this it has been consulting on the business rates appeals process.
The CLA has submitted a response to the consultation which can be found here.
The appeals system can be used by owners and tenants of business premises if they consider that the business rates valuation is incorrect.
The CLA feels that the system needs to be made more accessible to small business owners, the length of time an appeal takes needs to be reduced and the system in general needs to be made more transparent with better communication and better access to information on how to appeal and what to expect at each stage. The CLA opposes the suggestion that a fee should be introduced for lodging an appeal.
The consultation paperwork can be found here.
